As the screen industry continues to accelerate its sustainability ambitions, BAFTA Albert’s Studio Sustainability Standard is returning for its fourth round, offering studios a clear framework to measure, improve and celebrate environmental and social performance across their facilities.
The 2027/28 assessment round opens for submissions on 30 September 2026 and closes on 15 December 2026, offering studios around the world the opportunity to benchmark their progress and identify practical ways to reduce their impact. What is the Studio Sustainability Standard?
Created by BAFTA Albert in partnership with Arup, and developed alongside studios across the industry, the Studio Sustainability Standard recognises the vital role studio facilities play in supporting the industry’s transition towards a zero carbon, zero waste future. More than an accreditation, it is designed as a practical management tool, helping studios understand their impacts, prioritise action and demonstrate leadership to productions increasingly seeking sustainable filming locations.
The Standard assesses studios across six key areas: Climate, Circularity, Nature, People, Management and Data. Together, these themes provide a holistic view of sustainability performance, covering everything from energy demand, renewable energy generation and transport, to waste reduction, responsible sourcing, biodiversity, workforce wellbeing, governance and the collection of high-quality sustainability data.
Participating studios submit 24 months of operational data through a dedicated scorecard. Following assessment by BAFTA Albert and independent verification by Arup, each facility receives a bespoke performance report, a Sustainability Score and an Excellence Score. The resulting analysis not only highlights achievements but also pinpoints opportunities for improvement, enabling studios to make targeted decisions that deliver measurable environmental benefits.
The benefits extend beyond measurement alone. The Studio Sustainability Standard provides external recognition through an industry-recognised mark, rewards strong performance, supports alignment with Net Zero legislation and reporting processes, and offers a clear pathway for continuous improvement. Its flexible structure also
allows studios at different stages of their sustainability journey to participate and progress, regardless of size, type or location.
Round 4 also marks the beginning of the Standard’s two-year assessment cycle. By moving away from annual assessments, participating studios have more time to implement recommendations, embed operational changes and realise improvements before the next round. The performance rating awarded remains valid for 24 months, providing long-term recognition while encouraging ongoing development.
As demand grows for facilities that can support more sustainable production, participating in the Studio Sustainability Standard offers studios an opportunity to demonstrate commitment, drive positive change and contribute to a shared industry effort.
With submissions opening this September, round 4 represents a chance for studios not only to measure where they are today, but to shape a more resilient, responsible screen industry for tomorrow.
