What is BAFTA Albert Certification?

BAFTA Albert certification is the UK screen industry’s recognised standard for environmental sustainability in film and TV production. It celebrates productions that have actively measured, reduced and evidenced action to minimise their environmental impact.

Born out of the BBC’s carbon calculator created in 2009, the certification became a BAFTA led industry standard in 2011, marking fifteen years of progress in 2026.

Why it matters

BAFTA Albert certification is now embedded across the UK industry and is required by major broadcasters, streamers and funders. It provides a clear, trusted framework for accountability, helps productions cut carbon emissions, and sends a powerful signal to partners and audiences about a production’s commitment to environmental responsibility.

Data gathered through the certification process also builds a dynamic, sector wide picture of environmental impact. These insights guide future action and inform progressive cross industry initiatives such as SPARK: Clean Temporary Power by 2030 and ACCELERATE.

What's changing in 2026?

On September 2026, BAFTA Albert launched a new and updated Toolkit and certification programme. From September 16 – December 16, 2026, BAFTA Albert will be running two Toolkits in tandem. These are referred to as the Current Toolkit and the Next Generation Toolkit.

This transition period allows productions that have already started their certification in the Current Toolkit to complete this, and for productions that are beginning their certification journey to start in the Next Generation Toolkit.

From 17 December 2026, the Next Generation Toolkit will be the only Toolkit available, with two certification routes – Certified and Committed.

Why is certification changing?

What will the public see?

Productions that have completed the certification process using BAFTA Albert’s Current Toolkit will display logo that has been in circulation for some time at the end of their credits once their programme has finished. This logo includes a footprint and the words ‘Albert Certified Production’.

Productions that have completed the Certified or Committed route through BAFTA Albert’s Next Generation Toolkit will display the BAFTA Albert mark, followed by the words Certified or Committed, at the end of their credits once their production has finished.

There are also versions of these BAFTA Albert marks in Irish, Welsh and Gaelic.

What do the new marks mean?

BAFTA Albert Certified

BAFTA Albert Certified is the standard certification route for most productions. Productions submit their application during pre-production, but no earlier than one month before the production end to give an accurate picture of the programme’s sustainability performances.

The introduction of a weighted scoring system places greater emphasis on the actions that can make the biggest environmental impact.

BAFTA Albert Committed

BAFTA Albert Committed route is a new, specialist route designed for productions that require formal recognition before transmission or broadcast. It has been created for production types such as news, sport and continuing programmes, where timelines and production cycles can make the standard route more challenging.

There are a tailored set of questions designed specifically for these types of productions, making it easier to demonstrate intended actions and commitments which should be evidenced with policies and production documentation.

Eligible productions can apply from pre-production up until transmission and they will be asked to upload a signed Code of Practice that outlines their commitment to sustainability throughout the production.

Key Changes with the Next Generation Toolkit

01.

New Routes
BAFTA Albert has introduced two new routes with new and improved criteria that is designed to focus on impact and intent

02.

New Features
The Next Generation Toolkit provides productions with access to a new Carbon Calculator, updated sustainable production guidance and templates, and Certification with new criteria and on-screen certification marks.

03.

Upgraded Calculator
The carbon calculator has been upgraded to help the industry produce more complete, accurate, and auditable carbon footprints.

04.

Enhanced Reporting
The carbon footprint has been enhanced to help productions align their reporting with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, the world's most widely used standard for measuring and reporting greenhouse gas emissions. With the Next Generation Toolkit productions can now report across Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3, giving productions a clearer view of what direct changes they can make to decarbonise and where they must collaborate with suppliers to reduce their emissions.

05.

Emissions Visibility
Productions will also have deeper visibility of how emissions are calculated, helping them to better understand the data behind their results and where additional changes can be implemented on future productions.

The Next Generation Toolkit has been built using the most up to date emissions factors to ensure up to date, and accurate reporting for all users. As emissions factors were last updated for the Current Toolkit in 2024, you may notice a difference in footprint sizes when utilising the Carbon Calculator within the Next Generation Toolkit.
