Why is it effective?
01.
Building sets with reclaimed materials
With thanks to Art Department, Set Dec, Greens & Construction, many of the sets were crafted from recycled or reclaimed sources. The branches of the magical tree were sourced from an actual oak tree that was already due to be cut down by the council due to a diseased trunk. These, along with other salvaged wood, were used to build a number of the sets, including a greenhouse constructed entirely from reclaimed and rescued windows.
02.
Costume design rooted in nature and tradition
Silky’s beautifully patterned outfits were created by Eco-Printing, using leaves and flowers to leave their impressions on silks and fabrics – a direct nod to the natural world at the heart of the story. Many costume details were hand-made using traditional methods and materials. For example, the felt on Moonface’s collar was gathered from local sheep and hand-spun, while the Angry Pixie’s body armour and hat were hand-woven from home-dried rushes.
03.
Reducing waste
The production achieved its ‘zero to landfill’ waste objective and composted approximately 2,640kg of food waste. Processed by Select Environmental, this was repurposed as an ecological and chemical-free alternative to agricultural fertiliser. In addition, compostable packaging was replaced with reusable bowls to further reduce single-use products.
04.
Lower-impact catering choices
With support from catering team ‘On Thyme’, the production introduced ‘Meat Free Wednesdays’. Reducing meat consumption helped significantly lower the production’s carbon footprint, avoiding 18,568.9 miles of greenhouse gas emissions.
