Why is it effective?

01.

Expanding what sustainability means on set
Bosena felt existing sustainability guidance on productions was often too narrow in scope and too easily lost within the pressures of day-to-day production decisions. The Rainbow Memo was created as a way of bringing environmental responsibility together with human care – helping everyone on the production feel welcomed, respected and part of the filmmaking community. Referenced throughout the shoot, it helped create a safe and inclusive working environment regardless of age, experience or background. The approach has since been adopted by several other UK production companies and is now referenced as best practice within sustainable production training from leading screen institutions.

02.

Embedding sustainability into production decisions
Despite the challenges of filming in rural Cornwall, the team used a fleet of EV vehicles and partnered with Rogue Elements to reduce waste wood from set building – achieving 90% diverted from waste. 100% of costumes and props were reused and repurposed throughout production. Dream Catering provided vegetarian and vegan catering on set, helping reduce emissions while encouraging crews to embrace meat-free choices. Daily call sheets also included bilingual Cornish and English information about local plants and wildlife, encouraging greater awareness of Cornish identity, culture and biodiversity.

03.

Turning learning into long-term change
Throughout the production, Bosena focused heavily on communication and collective accountability. Midway through the shoot, the team shared updates with crew showing the CO2e savings achieved through veggie and vegan-only catering choices. The lessons learned from Rose of Nevada have since been developed into Bosena’s evolving Ecoso Toolkit, helping streamline planning processes and make sustainable workflows easier to implement on future productions. The company has also developed preferred supplier lists and procurement protocols that encourage circularity and consideration of the end-of-life impact of production materials. Bosena continues to share its processes openly across the industry, encouraging collaboration and knowledge-sharing to help accelerate positive change across film and TV production.
